Ms. Euler's class learns about economics through class project
Ms. Euler's fifth grade class have had a blast this school year learning about economics through a fun hands on project. Ms. Euler gave the class a list of job titles at the beginning of the year, and the students chose what profession they were interested in. Each student then filled out a job application listing three reasons why they thought they would be a good fit for the position.
"Once I reviewed their application, I hired them if I felt they are qualified to handle the job," said Ms. Euler. "They began (working) right away." Some of the positions included banker, police officer, line monitor, custodian, lunch/ attendance manager, and mailbox manager.
The students earned a salary for their job and could also earn money by turning in their homework, being prepared for class, and showing acts of kindness in the classroom. On the other hand, if a student had missing assignments or was not prepared for class, the "police officers" handed out fines and collected money.
On October 18th, the class participated in an auction and was able to spend the money they had collected. Parents generously donated new and used items that the students bid on. "Talkies were the most popular item," said Ms. Euler. "They went for over $150.00. The kids had a blast spending their hard earned money."
Fifth grader, Kayla Holden appreciated the project and the ability to purchase items in the end. "I loved it because it was great that everybody brought in stuff so we could spend the money we earned,"
