Congratulations to Lansing High School tennis duo, Lizzie Martin and Gabby Scarcelli, who are headed to the 5A state tournament!
Lansing High School tennis partners, Lizzie Martin and Gabby Scarcelli, secured a spot at the 5A state tournament after placing third at the De Soto regional tournament on October 11th and 12th. The girls left for Pittsburg this afternoon and are ready for the opportunity to compete this weekend. "I am extremely excited about qualifying for state," said Scarcelli. "All of the practices and tournaments are all worth it if you can finally make it to the final stage and say, 'I did it!'"
Although both girls are seniors, this is the first year they have competed together in doubles. Lizzie Martin has played singles throughout her high school career, so it has been a wonderful experience for her to be so successful in doubles. "I am proud of the effort and enthusiasm we both gave throughout the season," said Martin. "I don’t know what I would do if I had a different partner."
This is the eighth year in a row Lansing High School has had a girls' tennis athlete qualify for the state tournament. We wish the girls good luck this weekend and believe the future is bright for the Lansing tennis program. When asked what they would say to young students giving tennis a try, the girls had encouraging words to share. "I say go for it! I absolutely loved growing up playing tennis," said Gabby Scarcelli. "I’ve played tennis for 7 years and it’s been extremely rewarding."
Lizzie Martin also encouraged young athletes to learn the sport. "Tennis is about team work and working with the people around you. It is a fun sport that you can play for the rest of your life!"
Lansing Interim Superintendent Dan Wessel and Senator Kevin Braun came to the high school to give them a proper send off this afternoon, and the Lansing Police and Fire Departments came to support and escort the girls off school grounds.
Good luck to Gabby and Lizzie - Lansing is rooting for you!!!
