Gwynevere Buie named Kansas Doodle for Google Art Contest Winner!
Congratulations to Lansing Middle School seventh grader, Gwynevere Buie, who has won the state of Kansas for her Doodle for Google art contest! According to Google's website, Doodle for Google is an annual contest open to students in grades K-12. Students are invited to create their own Google doodle for the chance to have it featured on Google.com, as well as win some great scholarships and tech packages for their schools.
Gwynevere created her piece in Ms. Emily Bucher's art class as part of an assignment earlier this school year. Ms. Bucher had to submit her students' work to Google by March 19, 2019. The work was then judged by a panel of guest judges selected by Google. This year's panel of judges was made up of Mandy Manning, the 2018 National Teacher of the Year; Kermit the Frog; and Jimmy Fallon. The work was judged on artistic merit, creativity, and theme communication. This year's theme was "use your imagination to create a Google Doodle based on what inspires you".
Google representatives came to Lansing Middle School on May 22nd to hold a special celebration assembly to announce Gwynevere as the Kansas winner. All of the students and staff received Google t-shirts, and Gwynevere received a Google Chromebook, as well as a plaque and a large printout of her design on canvas. A video of the assembly is below.
Being a state winner is a tremendous accomplishment - her design was one of only 53 selected from the entire country and will now go on to to compete at the national level. We are asking any and all Lansing residents to share, share, share this post and vote for Gwynevere's artwork. National finalists will have their doodles featured on the Doodle for Google gallery and receive a $5000 scholarship, a trip to Google headquarters in California, Google hardware, and fun Googley swag.
If she is selected as the national winner, her artwork will be displayed on Google.com for one day, and she will receive the following:
- A $30,000 college scholarship
- A $50,000 technology package for our school district
- A trip to Google headquarters in California
- Google hardware
- Fun Googley swag
PUBLIC VOTING IS NOW CLOSED.
The national winners will be announced June 28, 2019.
