Kansas Open Records Act (KORA)

The Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) is a state law that requires public agencies, including school districts, to make their records available to the public upon request. This means that any member of the public, including parents, students, and journalists, can request access to documents, emails, and other records held by the school district. However, some records may be exempt from disclosure under certain circumstances, such as those involving privacy or security concerns. School districts must respond to requests for records within three business days and may charge a reasonable fee for copying and producing the requested records. Failure to comply with the KORA can result in legal action and penalties. It is important for school districts to understand and follow the KORA in order to promote transparency and accountability in their operations.

The Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) includes some important exclusions, rights, and responsibilities.

First, it's important to note that not all records held by a school district are subject to disclosure under KORA. Some types of records, such as personnel files, medical records, and certain law enforcement records, may be exempt from disclosure under state and federal law.

Second, individuals have the right to request access to public records held by a school district. This means that anyone can submit a request for access to records, regardless of whether they have a specific reason for wanting to see them. School districts must respond to these requests in a timely manner and provide access to the requested records unless they fall under one of the exclusions mentioned above.

Finally, school districts have a responsibility to comply with the KORA and to provide access to public records in a manner that is both efficient and transparent. Lansing USD469 has policies and procedures in place to respond to records requests in a timely and accurate manner, and we make every effort to ensure that the public is aware of their rights to access public records.
