This week’s academic spotlight shines on 8th grade science teacher Dr. Hollie Becker and the amazing experience she set up that her students won’t forget. In the final unit of the year, Water and Weather, students have explored critical concepts like air pressure, density, wind, convection, and the water cycle. However, this spring, they didn’t just learn about hot air balloons from Dr. Becker’s class, they saw one in person!
“Our text used a hot air balloon as an example,” Dr. Becker shared. “The balloon is only able to rise because the air inside is hotter and less dense than the surrounding air. Understanding that sets the stage for how students comprehend weather patterns, ocean currents, and the entire water cycle.”
To bring this to life, Dr. Becker partnered with Lori Hutchinson (Moulden), a Lansing High School alumna, fellow graduate, and certified commercial hot air balloon pilot.
“Lori and I actually attended LHS together in this same building,” Becker said. “The last time we were in this gym together was for pep band and graduation. Now, we’re back—sharing science in a whole new way.”
Hutchinson, who earned her Private Pilot’s Certificate in 2011 and her Commercial Certificate in 2013, brought her balloon to the middle school gym, filling the space with vibrant color, science in action, and a bit of an unmistakable smell that students made sure to comment to me about.
“It’s really cool,” Maddie Parks said, “but it kind of stinks!”
“Even though it smells, I love the colors!” Zaniyah Hill said.
Others were shocked with the size and beauty of the balloon, as it slowly filled up with air.
“It’s gorgeous! And as big as our gym!” Rilynne Manning said.
“It’s amazing! I love it!” Shyaira Reddins said.
The real-world demonstration deepened student engagement, sparked curiosity, and turned abstract science into something tangible, all things we want to happen in all off our classes here in Lansing.
“I hope this is something students will remember for years to come.” Dr. Becker said.
I think it will be, especially after hearing how much students enjoy learning from Dr. Becker:
“I love Dr. Becker’s class!” Maddie Parks said.
Thank you, Dr. Becker, for being an amazing teacher and bringing experiential learning into your classroom!
